The DeHoff 3060, available from Kays Engineering, is a single-axis boring machine designed for applications in the railroad industry, particularly boring the bottom housings of rail car hopper bins. The machine has a single spindle with maximum boring capacity of 3" (76.2 mm) and a maximum boring depth of 60" (1,524 mm). To meet rigorous material removal requirements, the cutting tool is powered by a 40-hp spindle motor with a four-speed gearbox. The Beckhoff CNC is programmed using G code. The machine features steel boxways and hand-scraped mating components rather than linear guideways and milled surfaces. This improves vibration damping, tool life and surface finish, the company claims.
