Micromachining With Maximized Results
Whether it's a prototype or serial production, Kern Precision says the Micro HD has it covered with short cycle times, low reject rate, precision and repeatability.

If someone thinks today’s milling strategies are maxed out, Kern Precision Inc. invites them to think again. The 5-axis Kern Micro HD milling machine contains features for opening new possibilities, like milling sintered carbide and ceramics. Kern highlights that the HD’s distinct features, like the linear motor in combination with micro-gap hydrostatics, create a machine designed for productivity and precision.

The HD cites its short cycle times to highly dynamic motion and acceleration, which bring a considerable cut in production time. The very low reject rate can be relevant when it comes to bringing down the cost of production. High precision and repeatability result from the Micro HD’s position accuracy and thermal stability, Kern says. With its damping properties and stick-slip-free tool movements, the HD aims to provide the highest possible surface quality.
The Kern Micro HD enables materials and processes to be reconsidered. For example, think of materials like tungsten carbide or sintered ceramics. When machining these ultra-hard materials, differences in the processes could expedite the end result. Punches for cutting inserts or medical tablets used to be obtained through EDM and then polished. On a Kern Micro HD, these materials can be milled with no polishing is necessary, according to the company.
