The TrodeMaster is a modified Fanuc RoboDrill VMC that is equipped for cutting graphite EDM electrodes. With full enclosures and a Torrit dust-collection system, the machine is useful for small job shops as well as large, in-house EDM facilities. Available from Methods Machine Tools, the machine uses 30-taper tooling and offers 3D contouring capabilities.According to the company, feed rates as fast as 2,125 ipm, accelerations to 1.5 G or more, a 24,000-rpm Big Plus spindle and 0.9-second tool changes enableshort cycle times during electrode machining.
The machine is equipped with an AI Contour Control II with 1000 block “look-ahead,” jerk control and a 0.4-millisecond block processing speed. The Fanuc 31i-A5 CNC provides hesitation-free contouring at high feed rates, the company says. In addition, the machine is equipped with spindle HRV control and thermal compensation to ensure dynamic accuracy and circularity to 0.00011" TIR. According to the company, the machine's rigidity makes it useful for hard-die milling and the production of copper electrodes. Other features include Ethernet, a laser tool setter and a 1,000-cfm dust collector. Optional features include fourth and fifth axes, spindle-measuring probes and robotic loading.
