Now available from Mazak is the Variaxis 730, a five-axis vertical machining center. Like the first Variaxis model introduced in 1999, it incorporates a high-precision table with 150 degrees of tilting range and five axes. The new model, however, features a 50-taper spindle, which is said to enhance productivity in heavy roughing and machining of castings, forgings, steels and stainless steels.

Other characteristics include spindle speeds as fast as 10,00 rpm; spindle power to 40 hp; 387 foot-pounds maximum torque; and 1,575 ipm rapid traverse rate in the X, Y, and Z axes. The table size on a single-pallet machine is 24.8" × 19.7", while the one with an optional two-pallet system measures 19.7" × 19.7".

The 50-taper spindle, along with a newly-designed slimmer spindle head, makes it possible to use longer tools, says the company. The standard tool magazine holds 30 tools; optional tool capacities of 40, 80 and 120 tools are also available.
