Designed for high-precision die and mold machining, Yasda鈥檚 YBM-Vi40 five-axis jig borer is said to reduce machining time of complicated shapes in extremely hard materials. The jig borer can tilt the workpiece to reduce cutter length requirements, which enables feed rates of 2,000 mm/min. and surface roughness of Ra 0.25 碌m.
The new machine integrates a rotary B/C axis on the Y axis of the YBM-950V, which is also part of the YBM series. This enhances control, minimizes weight differences in movable bodies on each axis and sets the heavy, movable bodies to a lower center of gravity. A rigid worm gear mechanism with a high reduction ratio is used for the tilting B axis. This stabilizes the machine against changes in tilting moments depending on the position and heavy cutting loads. The B axis is supported by three roller bearings, which help control reverse-motion performance. A direct-drive motor is used for the rotary C axis to enable accurate positioning without mechanical backlash, the company says.
A thermal distortion stabilized system ensures accuracy during long cycle times, the company says. Circulating temperature-controlled oil through the machine body and trunnion frame reduces thermal displacement of each axis and improves stability and precision. Also, for improved operability and workability, the distance between the spindle and the workpiece and the distance between the operator and the machining point have been decreased. Users can perform simultaneous, five-axis machining in all axes or in a 3+2 or 4+1 configurations.
